The search for a missing Sleepy Eye man is being suspended due to the Cottonwood River being over flood stage.

The Brown County Sheriff’s Office reports the search and recovery effort to find 73-year old Vincent Hugo Mathiowetz has become nearly impossible due to recent rains. The man has been missing for over a week after his vehicle was found at a boat landing on June 3.

Search efforts have been concentrated 3 ½ miles south of Sleepy Eye on Highway 4 near the Cottonwood River. The river is currently at 12.08-feet, which is above the 11-foot flood stage. With strong currents, boat navigation has led to unsafe conditions for personnel.

Officials say they will continue to monitor the river and resume the search once the river has lowered.
