The city of Mankato is asking residents to avoid activities around stormwater ponds.

“Although they have aesthetic value, stormwater ponds are part of the city’s infrastructure. Since they are constantly working, water is continuously moving making the ice inconsistent and unsafe, ” said Baird.

City environmental sustainability coordinator Rick Baird says stormwater ponds are part of a broad, city stormwater treatment system. Baird says they’re designed to catch contaminants that end up in storm drains and remove them before the water goes to the river.
