Gift card payments are now one of the most popular ways scammers are cheating people out of their money. Bao Vang with the Better Business Bureau in Minnesota says losses related to fraudulent gift card purchases have tripled since 2017.

“Crooks need a way to get money from victims. scammers are convincing victims to buy gift card as a payment method and ask for the numbers on the back of those cards. That is cash.”

Scammers have asked for payment via gift cards in a number of ways, including impersonating government agencies, tech support companies, romance scams and prize and sweepstakes winners.
