Blue Earth County businesses will have an opportunity to dispose of fluorescent light bulbs, ballasts and high-intensity discharge lamps at a discount – and up to ten for free for Xcel Energy customers.

It will cost 45 cents to dispose of bulbs four feet and under; bulbs over four feet long, circular, u-shaped, and compact bulbs cost 65 cents each. HID lamps, mercury vapor/metal halide, shatter-shield, and high-pressure sodium lamps cost $2.00.

Officials say fluorescent bulbs are required to be recycled because of the hazardous materials they contain, including mercury, which accumulates in the body and can cause serious health problems

The collection will take place at the Blue Earth County Household Hazardous Waste Facility located at 651 Summit Avenue in Mankato on Wednesday, July 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
