After plans were placed on hold last year, Blue Earth County is picking back up on a major project to reconstruct County Road 1 from the Mankato city limits to County Road 90.
Last year Officials delayed construction on the segment of roadway due to detours that were already in place for the Highway 22 project.
County Engineer Ryan Thilges says construction on the multi-year project will begin in late May.
“The project will include removing all of the bituminous pavement and the aggregate base. South of Mankato there is actually a fairly lengthy segment that’ll be reinforced soil slope construction. So, we’ll actually have to excavate the entire slope down to the bed rock, lay out grids of geotextile fabric and then bring up layers of sand and geotextile fabric all the way up to the full height of the road embankment.”
Bids for the project will open on May 2 and the County Board will consider the bids on May 8.
“It’s a very large project that has quite a bit of sequencing associated, so that we can get the construction traffic in and out of the project. Also get the residents that live out there in and out of the project.”
Phase one of improvements to County Road 1 between County Road 10 in Good Thunder and County Road 9 were finished in November of 2016.
