Blue Earth County will provide one-time funding to help get a skilled nursing facility for veterans in Preston off the ground. County Administrator Bob Meyer said the $10,000 donation will go far because, “The commitments from the local entities would be matched by the federal government on a two-for-one basis.”
Meyer said he talked about the contribution with local veterans officials, and Veteran Services officer Michael McLaughlin responded, “In his interaction with local veterans, they do oftentimes express a desire to utilize skilled nursing care in the rural parts of the state as opposed to the Minneapolis veterans home.”
“Even though Fillmore County is a long ways from Blue Earth County,” he said, “We do believe we will have some local veterans that will utilize that facility.”
There is a comparable facility in Luverne but there is a two-year wait for a bed there.
Preston officials reached out to several counties to secure funding for the project. The legislature provided $10.5 million in the public works bill.
