A 65-year-old Mankato man is facing serious charges after a 911 call reported a burglary in progress, and that someone was bleeding from a knife wound.

Mankato Department of Public Safety Commander Dan Schisel.

Commander Dan Schisel said, “When officers arrived there they find a male individual being held down by occupants of the home and other people from the area that were summoned to help.” Straub was reportedly screaming, “I’m going to kill them.”

“The male had come over, knocked on a door of a home,” Schisel explained, “At some point pushes his way into the home and becomes assaultive toward the occupants inside this residence.”

When the officer asked Straub why he was at the home, he answered that he was there to “kill Mexicans.”

Schisel said it’s been documented as a possible hate crime. “The belief of the officer is this is a situation that would rise to our level of a biased offense. It’s a form that we fill out and it’s a tracking mechanism. All of our forms were completed in that fashion,” he explained.

Straub also admitted to investigators that he was prescribed medication for schizophrenia but wasn’t taking it because he doesn’t believe he has the disorder.

The criminal complaint shows a folding knife was found at the scene, which police believe was used in the assault. Straub is charged with burglary and assault with a dangerous weapon.

Schisel said the man who was cut with the knife received a minor wound to his hand that did not require treatment.
