After a five-hour bench trial, a Brown County judge has found a Cottonwood man guilty of soliciting a minor for sex. The trial of 46-year-old Paul Lund Jr. took place Friday, and Wednesday Judge Todd Westphal ruled him guilty.
Lund was one of several suspects arrested during a sex sting operation in August 2017, after he responded to a Backpage ad posted by law enforcement. During the text correspondence, law enforcement informed Lund that the individual posing as “Ashley” was just 16 years old. Lund responded that was illegal but then stated it “would be fun.”
Lund proceeded to send multiple sexually explicit texts to “Ashley” until he arrived at the house where he was met by law enforcement.
Assistant Brown County Attorney Dan Kalk, who prosecuted the case, said they are pleased with the verdict and called it, “Another significant victory for this community.”
Another man caught during the same sting, 70-year-old Lawrence Depyper, was convicted by a jury on July 6th.
Investigators say more than 50 suspects who replied to online posts were interested in having sex for money.
