“Now is not the time to talk about new gun restrictions,” says Republican gubernatorial hopeful Paul Gazelka as Saint Paul continues reeling from last weekend’s mass shooting:

“More and more people, men and women, are buying guns to protect themselves because there’s not enough police.”

Saint Paul Democratic Senator Sandy Pappas responds it’s too easy to get guns — legally or illegally:

“People want to hunt — my brother’s a hunter, I eat venison — that’s fine.  But that doesn’t mean that you should be able to carry guns into local restaurants and bars.”

Gazelka responds law-abiding citizens are not the problem:

“This is a battle among gangs and others that just aren’t paying attention to the law enforcement people because there’s not enough around to stop them.”

Saint Paul Police Chief Todd Axtell says no number of police patrolling the streets could have prevented the shootings.
