The City of Mankato was selected to as the new owners of the historic Kern Bridge. Plans for the bridge are to span it over the Blue Earth River to connect the Land of Memories Park, 100 Amos Owen Lane, to Sibley Park, 900 Mound Avenue. Connectivity would make it easy to travel from park to park while also adding an interesting architectural structure to the parks’ landscapes.
Prior to doing so, the bridge will be rehabilitated to modern standards for trail use with existing or new historically accurate materials to help ensure the bridge retains its listing in the National Register of Historic Places to reflect the new location and use.
Federal funds will help cover 80 percent of the cost to reconstruct and relocate the bridge. Mankato was selected out of eight cities and counties that submitted applications for the bridge.
