An Iowa man was arrested after Mankato Police say he left the scene of a crash at Madison Avenue and Basset Drive Monday afternoon.

Investigators say the other driver had the right of way when 32-year-old David Burkhow turned off Madison and onto Basset and hit the other car’s driver side door. The victim followed the vehicle to the Blue Earth County Justice Center, where police responded.

The officer says he wasn’t able to get a clear story from Burkhow, who said he was unfamiliar with Mankato and first that he was turning left when the other car swerved into him, but then admitted he wasn’t sure if he had been trying to turn left or right.

The criminal complaint shows he failed field sobriety tests but admitted he’d been taking Oxycontin and Flexeril – a muscle relaxer – and would likely fail a blood test. A blood sample was sent to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

He’s facing preliminary charges of DWI, failing to stop for a crash, and driving after his license was revoked.

Records show Burkhow has four impaired driving convictions in the past ten years.
