(St. Paul, MN) — A Minnesota judge is pushing the pause button on the state’s new police use of force policy. Justice Leonardo Castro wrote an order yesterday that suspended new provisions that were approved by the state Legislature months after the death of George Floyd in 2020. The law does not permit officers to justify deadly force by claiming it was used to protect themselves or others from death or great bodily harm. Four law enforcement groups sued the state in July after failing to convince the Legislature to push back a deadline for training officers on the new requirements.
