Last weekend was the first since students returned to Minnesota State University – Mankato and other area colleges, and after a quieter summer, the preliminary numbers show there was the predictable upswing in the number of people busted for underage drinking.

“Between Thursday, August 23rd and Sunday morning at 7:00 a.m. there were approximately 52 underage consumption citations that were issued,” said Mankato Police Commander Dan Schisel.

Unlike some prior years when they broke up large parties with dozens of people there, this year it appears the gatherings were more intimate. Schisel said, “I saw one that had maybe 15-20 at one particular location but   nothing that I saw larger than that.”

If the preliminary numbers hold up, that is a significant reduction from the same weekend last year, when 167 underage drinking citations were issued.
