The Lower Sioux Indian Community in Morton is working to alleviate Native American health disparities by encouraging nutrition changes and healthy lifestyle activities.

Tribe leaders have developed programs for all ages that focus on preventive measures to help tackle t he high rate of diabetes and heart disease.

The tribe was recently honored with the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota Trailblazer recognition.

The program includes nutrition programs that increase access to healthier indigenous food and beverage choices; diabetes bingo and an elder nutrition program for senior members; fitness classes that include a running club, taekwondo, and an open gym.

The new Lower Sioux Health Care Center also provides members primary care with physicians and nurse practitioners on staff, dietitian services, dental care and a pharmacy.
