A Minneapolis man convicted in an assault of his two–month–old baby has been sentenced to almost 17 years in prison.
Blue Earth County Judge Bradley Walker sent 38–year–old Mohamud Ahmed to the St. Cloud State Penitentiary and also ruled that he will have to serve two-thirds of that sentence before he’s eligible for release.

He was credited for 182 days served.

Ahmed was convicted of malicious punishment of a child causing great bodily harm and assault causing great bodily harm, after prosecutors said the baby had traumatic brain injuries and several broken bones, and doctors said the injuries were likely caused by shaking.

The baby’s mother told investigators that the child became ill after he’d been left alone with Ahmed.
