Quick action by a man in a nearby fishing house may have saved the lives of two fishermen from Wheaton after their pickup crossed an ice-heave and sank on Lake Traverse in western Minnesota. Sheriff Trevor Wright says the man heard something unusual, looked out his window and saw the truck going under:

“Quickly went out to his pickup, got a tow rope, ran to the victims and was able to throw a rope to the victims and pull ’em out safely.”

Ice kept breaking away as the two men tried to pull themselves out of the water. One told the sheriff he was near exhaustion and would not have survived much longer. Two dogs died when the pickup sank.
