A Mankato state lawmaker is looking into the situation of a local mother, Josephina Flandes, who said her son is being held in a federal facility – yet she has not been able to get any information from ICE about where he is or how he’s doing.
DFL State Representative Jack Considine said his status appears to be somewhat in limbo because, “They’ve told him he’s going to be deported but they’ve somehow taken off the deportation list and the family can’t get any information at all.”
He said Flandes has considered hiring a lawyer but he asks, “How many families can afford to go out and lay down $10,000 or $15,000 just to get some answers? Right now, the sheriff’s department doesn’t have the answers, our local judges don’t have the answers, and the ICE department doesn’t communicate anything they don’t feel like they need to.”
Considine shares the Mankato woman’s concern that he will be harmed if he is sent back to Mexico, “A different country that he hasn’t seen in 20 years and face gangs that kidnap people coming from this country so that they can hold them for ransom from folks back here. It’s just a horrible situation.”
The young man was born in Mexico but wasn’t raised there.
Although it’s a federal level issue, Considine said, “I’m finding it extremely frustrating as a state representative to have absolutely no say in what’s going on in our state.”
Considine has reached out to U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith to ask for their help.
