A Mankato man has been arrested for 3rd degree murder after a joint investigation by the North Mankato Police Department, The Minnesota River Valley Drug Task Force, and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension into a drug overdose death in April.

On April 12th North Mankato Police were called to an apartment for an unresponsive woman and found a 29-year-old dead. Investigators say evidence at the scene, including a white powder and drug paraphernalia, led them to believe that the woman died of a drug overdose.

The BCA identified that powder as Fentanyl, and the Minnesota River Valley Drug Task Force identify 38-year-old Otis Dear of Mankato as the source of the drug.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 100 times more potent than morphine.

An autopsy was conducted by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner and Fentanyl was found in the victim’s system; the cause of death was ruled an overdose.

Dear is currently in the Nicollet County Jail awaiting his first court appearance.
