The American Lung Association has presented a Mankato nurse with a national award for her efforts to reduce tobacco use.

Sandy Renor received the C. Everett Koop Unsung Hero Award at their annual awards banquet in Chicago last week.

That award is given each year to an advocate for tobacco control.

In 2006, Renor joined the Mankato Area Smoke Free Coalition and rallied on street corners waving a “Love your Lungs” sign. The ALA says her hard work with the coalition led to the Mankato City Council vote to make bars and restaurants smokefree.

When Minnesota funded the Statewide Health Improvement Partnership in 2009, Renor became the “Tobacco Expert” and began extensive researched that led to the implementation of county tobacco-free grounds policies.
