The City of Mankato has partnered with Vitals™ Aware Services to enhance public safety service. The Vitals™ App allows individuals or caregivers to create secure, personalized profiles with critical information about a vulnerable person. The service is recommended for individuals with invisible and visible conditions and disabilities (behavioral, developmental, intellectual, or mental health), older adults, and parents, guardians or caregivers of vulnerable adults.

When a person wearing a Vitals™ Bluetooth device comes within 80-feet of a first responder, that responder will be notified through a smartphone about the individual’s needs and how to best interact with them. Profile information is shared in real-time and temporarily shared only with public safety, first responders and 911 dispatchers, who are fully trained in how to use the app.

“The more information we get when first working with the public, the more effective we can be in providing the best service or response,” says Director of Public Safety Amy Vokal. “The app will provide first responders another resource to help interact with individuals who need assistance when communicating their unique needs.”

Information added to the app is determined by the individual and may include:

  • medical information
  • critical needs
  • behavior triggers
  • de-escalation techniques
  • code words or a calming message (including video options) from caregivers, helping bring them virtually to the scene

Interested individuals are encouraged to sign up for the app online.
