A Mapleton Police officer had a close call with a drunk driver while directing traffic after the Mapleton Town and Country Days demolition derby.

Investigators say Officer Andrew Hagen was directing traffic on Highway 22, and while most vehicles stopped as directed for several pedestrians one car continued to accelerate and Hagen had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit.

Hagen jumped in his squad car and pulled over the pickup driven by 54-year-old Steven Kind of North Mankato.

While Kind told the officer he had just two beers, the criminal complaint shows he failed field sobriety tests and blew a .20 on a portable breath test. Court records show he has a previous drunk driving conviction from 2016.
