Law enforcement statewide is continuing to crackdown on distracted driving this month.

That includes the Wayzata Police Department who saw one of their own, Officer Bill Mathews was killed last September after being hit by an alleged distracted driver.

His widow Shawn said she and her 7-year-old son are still learning how to live with the consequences of one person’s poor choice but, “Today each of you have the opportunity to raise the awareness of the dangers of distracted driving. Together we can start a ripple. A ripple that will affect lives. A ripple that will change behaviors, and a ripple that will give some meaning to this senseless loss.”

More than 30 officers will be out today specifically patrolling Western Hennepin County as part of the Highway 12 Coalition’s distracted driving campaign.
