Minnesota’s newest U.S. Senator will pay a visit to St. Peter Thursday to talk about local efforts to ensure that there is enough affordable housing in the region.
Democratic Senator Tina Smith will sit down with local leaders, housing experts, health care, and court officials to discuss the creation of the Solace Housing apartment complex; it’s part of an effort to help keep people who have gone through the court system from re-offending.
The “Housing First” model provides people with affordable housing as they reintegrate into society to help reduce the odds that they will end up back in jail or prison.
Smith was recently named ranking member of the Senate Rural Development Subcommittee, and is working to ensure that rural Minnesota communities have adequate affordable housing to meet residents’ needs. The apartment complex was rehabilitated with the help of federal rural development funds.
