The deepest impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are being felt by Minnesotans who identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. DEED Commissioner (Department of Employment and Economic Development) Steve Grove says over the last 12 months the unemployment rate has been higher among these groups:
“We see black Minnesotans with a 9.5 percent and Hispanics 7.3 percent compared to 5.8 percent for whites.”
The state’s unemployment rate sits at 4.5 percent. Grove says moving forward the state needs to focus on ways to get those hardest by the pandemic back into the workforce.
