Minnesota has been thrust into the national spotlight on the topic of de-funding police, making it a target for criticism from conservative politicians. When asked about the pledge to de-fund police by nine Minneapolis City Council members, Missouri Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer turned the blame on Governor Tim Walz.
“Minnesota is run by an extreme left-wing liberal who is just a crazy nutjob off the chart. I’ve served with the attorney general from Minnesota. I’ve served with the governor of Minnesota. And now the attorney general’s son, who is a clone of his father, sits on the City Council. It’s a mess up there.”
So far a move to completely abolish MPD has not gained traction with state and federal lawmakers, many of whom instead advocate pushing for reforms of the current system.
