Emergency assistance to families… grants to child care providers… expanding unemployment insurance — among items on Minnesota House Democrats’ list of top priorities for this legislative session:
“Immediate steps that the legislature can and should take to help workers, families, small businesses and so many others hurt most by the COVID-19 pandemic.”
…says House Majority Leader Ryan Winkler. But Lino Lakes Senator Roger Chamberlain, an influential Republican in the GOP-controlled Minnesota Senate, appears leery of Democrats’ list:
“It costs money. These are gonna be difficult issues and we’ll have to tackle them.”
Democrats also propose additional state supports for students struggling under distance learning. Chamberlain responds it does no good to just treat symptoms. He says all students need to be back in the classroom as soon as possible.
