The Minnesota House Transportation Committee is giving the green light to a bill allowing undocumented residents to obtain a Minnesota driver’s license. Republican Representative John Petersburg of Waseca wanted the licenses for immigrants to specify that they are not valid voter identification:
“I take everybody’s word that they’re not going to use it for that but if they’re not than why not put it on the license that it is not for voting.”
Bill sponsor, Representative Aisha Gomez of Minneapolis, says this is about driving not voting:
“You know, we’re not going to give people a second-class driver’s license, we want people to have.”
Anyone who applies for a driver’s license would have to take a permit and driver’s test. The measure now goes to the House Judiciary Committee.
