Two unions have merged to form a new 50-thousand member “SEIU Healthcare Minnesota and Iowa.”  Spokesman Jamie Gulley says union members in both states face many of the same battles, two years into a global pandemic:

…”fatigue, grief and burnout, as we face an historic shortage of workers in our industry.  We face many of the same employers who’ve expanded and who use their size to squeeze worker pay and benefits, and who seem to value their profit margins more than their workers, patients or the communities they serve.”

Gulley notes that Mayo, HealthPartners and Mercy One have facilities in both Minnesota and Iowa.   (Minnesota brings 45-thousand members into the new union and Iowa five-thousand.)
