MnDOT is exploring the possibility of a Minnesota River State Trail between Mankato and Saint Peter as work continues to formulate a vision for Highway 22.

District 7 Director of Public Engagement Rebecca Arndt says the DNR has already been tasked by the Legislature to look at the possibility of a trail.

“It is in that area, so we’ve just kind of partnered up with them and drawn them into the corridor study to see if we can learn more from people on what their wishes are for a trail in the area.”  Image result for highway 22 corridor study mn

Arndt adds the challenge is that where a trail might be able to be easily implemented, it might not be where residents want to bike.

“It gets difficult. They do have quite a bit of progress made on the piece between Mankato and Saint Peter, because they’re working with Unimin (mining company) and the community of Kasota. All of the partners are at the table, but there’s still missing links in there. We need input from the public on what this should look like.”

The overall plan is studying the corridor from Mapleton to Saint Peter and Officials are aiming to gather information from residents about a potential trail and roadway alternatives. Three open houses are planned for June along the Highway 22 corridor with meetings in Mapleton, Mankato and Kasota.

“This could take a lot of different direction. Is access more important and maybe slowing the traffic down. Especially in the Mankato to Saint Peter area, there’s a lot of access point. But the traffic still wants to go flying along. Is it another Highway 169? We have a four-lane facility right parallel to it, or does it take a different approach. So, it’s some hard decisions to make.”

MnDOT has funding set aside for the corridor in the 2024 long-range plan.
