The Minnesota Department of Transportation will be expanding its fiber optic network in the Mankato and North Mankato area starting April 16, weather permitting, to improve its traffic management system.

The project will include the installation of new fiber optic cable from the MnDOT building located on Bassett Drive in Mankato, and along Highways 22, 14, and 169. Crews will also install a new traffic monitoring system including cameras for maintenance and non-intrusive vehicle detection devices for traffic data collection.  Footage from the installed cameras will not be recorded.  Camera feeds will be intermittently monitored, typically as part of incident (e.g.: crash) response efforts, or to verify road pavement conditions.

There will be little impact to traffic, however, MnDOT reminds motorists to watch for crews working near the roadway. The project is expected to be complete by early October.
