Safety preparations continue in Minneapolis ahead of the upcoming trial of former MPD officer Derek Chauvin. Mayor Jacob Frey says he anticipates more “outside” influences will attempt to create confusion during protests, just like they did last summer in the wake of George Floyd’s death.

“Those outside instigators that were certainly present in late May and early June, they seek to cause destruction and chaos in the city by using peaceful protestors as cover, by using them as a shield.”

A coordinated law enforcement effort has been in the planning stages for months and Frey says MPD has held de-escalation training in preparation for the upcoming trials. Jury selection for the Chauvin trial is scheduled to begin Monday.
