A New Ulm man is jailed after the Mankato Department of Public Safety says he fired a gun during a drug-related assault and robbery.
Just after midnight Wednesday morning, officers were sent to an apartment on East Cherry Street after dispatch got a call about a disturbance that was taking place.
MDPS Commander Dan Schisel said the people who live in that apartment were holding down 20-year-old Christian Mayhew-Ykema when they arrived and, “It was later determined that there was a handgun involved in this fight. The handgun actually went off.”
Investigators believe that Mayhew-Ykema pulled the gun on one of the roommates. Schisel said, “There was a fight over the weapon and it discharged in a direction where (the bullet) went into a wall.”
Nobody was hurt.
Schisel says it wasn’t a random event and, “it appears that this is narcotics related.”
Mayhew-Ykema is charged with several offenses, including assault, intentional discharge of a dangerous weapon, drug possession, and first-degree aggravated robbery.
