A North Mankato man was taken to jail after trying to land a free stay at a Mankato motel.

Mankato Department of Public Safety Commander Dan Schisel said an employee of the Riverfront Inn determined that a room that should have been vacant was not and, “She called the room, a male picked up the phone and at that point, they went down there with management to try to figure out what was going on. The male indicated that he was there visiting someone else at a different room.”

They weren’t able to identify the man the first time he tried to stay free, but Schisel said 41-year-old Jason Hoppe made it easy to catch him. “When they went to the room, the male went out the back window of that room that was supposed to be empty and the next day she noticed the male back at that address and called police.”

Although it’s not clear how Hoppe managed to get into the room, Schisel says he broke out a window and a screen to get away.

He was also apparently carrying drug items. Schisel said, “When officers arrived he had thrown a bag, and inside that bag were a couple of glass pipes which tested positive for a controlled substance.”

Schisel said preliminary charges include burglary, drug possession, and other crimes.
