A plethora of street projects and improvements are slated for this summer in North Mankato after the City Council signed-off on 733-thousand dollars worth of construction on Monday.

Just over 360-thousand dollars will be spent to reconstruct Jefferson Avenue from Cross Street to Range Street, which includes water and sewer improvements.

The council also approved 373-thousand dollars for five projects in the 2018 Street Improvement Project. The final layer of bituminous surfacing will be placed on Raymond Drive and Leona Drive this summer. Two roadways will receive new overlay and isolated curb and gutter replacement, which includes Tower Boulevard from Commerce Drive to Lee Boulevard along with Howard Drive from Lor Ray Drive to Countryside Drive. Crews will also lay asphalt at the Spring Lake Park hockey rink parking lot and driveway.

City Engineer Dan Sarff says the original base bid on the projects came in 10-percent below estimates.

“We accepted a number of alternate bids due to budgetary constraints. We awarded the base bid and then a couple of small alternates. The base came in very close to what our budgeted amount was, so we were able to accept a couple small park improvement projects.”

The Council opted to put a new overlay on the basketball courts at Wheeler Park and make trail repairs at Benson Park as alternate projects.
