North Mankato says it would like to throw its hat in the ring to host Hockey Day Minnesota.
Officials say they are building a case after they saw a record number of 77 teams participate in the Anthony Ford Pond Hockey Tournament in January and there is now a new full-size outdoor hockey rink at Spring Lake Park.
“I think after that event and after the event in St. Cloud this year with Hockey Day Minnesota, some people came back and said, you know, we really need to start making a concerted effort to consider bringing that event to Mankato,” says City Administrator John Harrenstein.
He adds they are now starting to seriously explore the opportunity to host the event.
“We’ll be working with partners that will need to be involved in that to pull it off. Like the University, Visit Mankato. One of the first considerations is gonna be, how much is this going to cost, is the community and partners in this event comfortable with that cost and can we essentially raise enough sponsorship’s to cover the cost of bringing an event like that to this area.”
Harrenstein adds that the community is in a great position to highlight Mankato and North Mankato following the loss of Minnesota Vikings Training Camp.
The City of Bemidji will host the 13th Annual Hockey Day Minnesota in 2019.
