The 42nd annual Dr. Michael T. Fagin Pan African Student Leadership Conference will be held next week at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Vindicating the Suffering of Our Ancestors and Earning the Respect of Future Generations” and organizers say it’s meant to build student leaders and provide an opportunity to discuss issues that affect African-American people.

Conference highlights include a keynote address by Bernard LaFayette Jr., civil rights movement activist and authority of the strategy on nonviolent social change.

A panel discussion will include state Rep. Ilhan Omar, the first Somali-American Muslim legislator elected to a state legislature in the United States, and Minneapolis City Council Member Andrea Jenkins, the first transgender woman of color elected to public office in the United States.

The conference takes place Wednesday through Friday.
