Minnesota congressman Colin Peterson, Representative Jim Hagedorn, Governor Tim Walz and other lawmakers were in Worthington Wednesday to discuss re-opening processing plants. Worthington is the site of the closed JBS facility. Governor Walz says he appreciated President Trump’s executive order to re-open meat processing facilities.
“The President was correct in enacting the defense production act related to these facilities”, said Walz. “We’ll see in the next few days how to get a plant back up and running and how to keep the food supply safe.”
Peterson says it cannot be done without making the plants safe for its employees
“Governor Walz and I won’t support anything until the workers are happy, safe, and comfortable going back to work,” said Peterson.
Peterson says the short-term goal is to open the JBS plant in Worthington, the Smithfield plant in Sioux Falls, and the Tyson plant in Waterloo, Iowa as soon as possible.
