The poultry industry in Minnesota is closely monitoring for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza cases.(HPAI)  Abby Schuft a University of Minnesota Extension educator says whether it’s in an urban backyard or a large-scale operation, or anything in between, biosecurity depends on everyone involved in raising poultry to follow necessary steps.

“The commercial industry has really been paying mind to bio-security and preparedness since 2015 but what’s ultimately different this year with this year’s event is the number of small and backyard flocks that are being confirmed to have HPAI.”

Officials in South Dakota said on Saturday that 85,000 birds in two-state facilities were euthanized amid the state’s first avian flu outbreak since 2015. Bird flu has also been confirmed in neighboring Iowa and Wisconsin
