Registration is now open for Camp Sweet Life, a program in August held at Camp Patterson on Lake Washington meant to give kids with Type 1 diabetes the same summer opportunities as any other child.

Executive Director Rene Maes Jr. said the program is in its eighth year and, “We’ve just got a great program for kids with Type 1 diabetes and their families to network and just help these kids understand they can do whatever they want to do even though they have this disease.”

It’s expanded greatly since its start in 2010. Maes explained, “We started with a one-day camp, they a two-day camp, now we’re a six-day camp.”

Maes said about 20 campers attended the first year and, “This year we’ll have about 90 kids with Type 1 diabetes – we’ll probably have a staff of about 60, including medical staff.”

The organization is also hosting its third annual Sweet Ride – a motorcycle ride fundraiser to benefit the camp – on June 23rd.
