The Saint Peter City Council plans to take up the issue of Tobacco 21 during a work session tonight.
To this point, the Council has taken a wait-and-see approach according to City Administrator Todd Prafke.
“They believe overall that any initiative like this needs to be done at the the state level. It doesn’t make sense to do it jurisdiction by jurisdiction and at a minimum, it should be done at the regional level. So we’ve been kind of at a wait and see to see how North Mankato and Mankato either work or don’t work things out.”
Last week the Mankato City Council voted down increasing the purchasing age for tobacco from 18 to 21, a move that essentially nullified North Mankato’s approval of the ordinance change a week prior.
The workshop begins at 5:30 p.m.
