Saint Peter is submitting a grant application to the Department of Natural Resources for funding that would be used to construct a fishing pier and asphalt trail at the Hallett’s Pond Nature Area.
The total project cost is just over 55-thousand dollars, with the idea that the grant would cover at least 50-percent of the total cost for improvements to the pond that is located near the Nicollet County Fair Grounds.
City Administrator Todd Prafke says the improvements will greatly enhance the area.
“Certainly it would provide additional accessibility for everyone there. The pier, as an example, down at the Mill Pond here in Saint Peter is used a lot. So those enhancements, being the pier and the bituminous surface around the pond will really make it a lot easier for a lot of people to enjoy that area.”
The timeline for the project depends on a successful grant application, but City Officials anticipate construction will be in either 2019 or 2020.
The announcement for the DNR grant funding will be made in June. An application for funding the project was turned down in 2017.
