The Minnesota River Valley Drug Task Force served a search warrant at a hotel in Mankato on Monday after a report that a convicted felon was illegally carrying a gun and the 41-year-old homeless man is now charged with five weapons crimes, all of them felonies.

Agents say Quinton Brooks admitted that the gun found in a backpack in the room was his, but said he had never fired it and he wasn’t responsible for removing the serial number from the weapon.

Brooks said he bought the gun in Brown County for personal protection and knew that he was banned from possessing it because of a felony drug possession conviction in Nicollet County in 2013.

Court records show Brooks also has five active arrest warrants in Brown and Blue Earth Counties.
