The House article of impeachment against former President Trump will be sent to the Senate today (MON). Some Republicans say the timing is contrary to President Joe Biden’s pledge for unity during his administration. U-S Senator Tina Smith counters that and says:

“We do need unity, but you can’t have unity without an honest appraisal of what happened, what are we supposed to do, say “oh well, that happened, but that was yesterday,” if we don’t have accountability and consequences, what happened on January 6th could happen again.”

The impeachment article, which passed in the House with bipartisan support, accuses the now-former President of inciting the violent attack on the Capitol on January 6th. Five people died as a result of the siege.
