The Sonnabend family of Vernon Center has been named Blue Earth County’s “2018 Farm Family of the Year” by the University of Minnesota.

The farm was started by Tammy’s great-great-grandfather who purchased the land in 1891. The Century Farm, located in Ceresco Township, has been passed down through the family for generations and is now run by Dean and Tammy.

The Sonnabends grow corn and soybeans on about 2,300 acres and custom finish hogs.

Dean is a Ceresco Township Supervisor and Tammy serves as township clerk/treasurer. Dean is on the board of Crystal Valley and 40 Square Cooperative Solutions. Dean previously served on the Minnesota Soybean Growers Association board.

The families will be officially recognized in a ceremony Thursday, August 9th at the annual Farmfest near Redwood Falls.
