State epidemiologist Ruth Lynfield says there’s a new treatment in the fight against COVID-19.

“The FDA issued emergency authorization for Remdesivir on May first,” said Lynfield. “This drug offers a new treatment option for those with severe cases of COVID-19. Preliminary data says it reduces the time it takes for a patient to recover.”

Lynfield says an initial study says patients taking Remdesivir left the hospital four days earlier than those in a placebo group. She says the state received an initial shipment Saturday and distributed the drug to those with the most severe cases of coronavirus.
