Thousands of Minnesotans will likely be firing up propane-powered grills today to help celebrate the national holiday.

State fire marshal Bruce West says if things go wrong and an unwanted fire starts.

“Don’t try to put the fire out first and then call 9-1-1, call 9-1-1. If you got a fire extinguisher nearby use that to try to put that fire out. But, if you can, you can get down and shut the tank off if it is safe to do that. If nothing else, just try to knock that down with a fire extinguisher and wait for the fire department to arrive.”

West says if you haven’t used your grill yet this season, you should make sure the tank is full and securely fastened, clean the grill, including the grease-collection plate, and make sure there is nothing flammable placed around the grill.
