A Mankato man is facing child abuse-related charges after police said he left his step-daughter bruised and swollen following punishment of the child.

32-year-old John Cermak of Mankato.

Mankato Department of Public Safety Commander Jeremy Clifton said the elementary school child’s mother called police Tuesday morning about injuries the family says were caused by 32-year-old John Cermak.

Clifton said the child’s injuries were, “Not life threatening, not hospitalized, but could be seen in plain view on the child – some bruising and swelling – as a result of what may have occurred between the step father and the child…or the allegations as such.”

There is more than one child in the home, and Clifton said they’ve engaged community partners in the investigation. He called it, “An unfortunate circumstance to kind of delve into. Obviously, we have partners to help us work through that – Blue Earth County Human Services, child protection.”

The department has requested charges of malicious punishment of a child and domestic assault.
