Charges are pending against a 31-year-old man from the Osakis/Alexandria area after he shot a sheriff’s deputy with a compound bow during a standoff in Sauk Centre Thursday.

The incident began when a stolen pickup from Osaskis exited into Sauk Centre, traveled through backyards. and smashed into parked vehicles and through a garage.

Stearns County Sheriff Don Gudmundson said the suspect then ran into a home, where he allegedly shot Orvis with the homeowner’s compound bow.

The suspect was wounded by three shots from officers and then taken into custody after nearly two hours. Nearby homes were evacuated during the standoff.

Stearns County Sheriff Don Gudmundson said, “Law enforcement response was wonderful. It was really well done. It was well-coordinated. We felt like this ended as well as it possibly could have.”

Deputy Paul Orvis was shot in the forearm Thursday and was taken to a hospital, where he is in good condition. Orvis had surgery to remove the arrow shaft.

Gudmundson said more than one officer from different agencies fired their guns, but it’s unclear who shot the suspect. The 31-year-old man was shot in the left shoulder and buttocks and was flown to a hospital.
