New Minnesota DWI law goes into effect on Wednesday

A new law that goes into effect Wednesday means people convicted of driving while intoxicated will lose their driver’s license and be prohibited from operating motor vehicles, along with all-terrain vehicles, motorboats and snowmobiles. Lawmakers passed the law following the death of an 8-year old in January after being struck by a snowmobiler whose license was revoked after multiple DWI offenses. The changes apply to violations that occur after Wednesday. Before, people convicted of DWI in a highway-licensed vehicle could still legally operate ATVs, boats and snowmobiles.
