Minnesota criticized for lack of sickle cell care

Advocates for people with sickle cell disease are criticizing Minnesota's lack of care, saying the number of related deaths in the state is unclear because officials don't track adult cases. Advocates also say adult cases are climbing to crisis levels as more West Africans and African-Americans move to Minnesota, which has no adult sickle cell clinics or hematologists specializing in the disease. Sickle cell is determined when misshapen red blood cells appear that can block blood vessels, cause pain and life-threatening conditions, like kidney failure and stroke. Commerce Drive project receives an additional $700,000 from MnDOT

North Mankato has been awarded another large chunk of money to help with the 2-million dollar overhaul of Commerce Drive. The grant of 700-thousand dollars from the MnDOT Area Transportation Partnership (ATP) Program will go towards reconstructing the roadway in 2019. City Administrator John Harrenstein says the funds are on top of the 900-thousand dollars the city has already received from the Federal Surface Transportation fund.  "That really helps to get the project done as well as reducing the impact on the tax levy, annual CIP (Capital Improvement Program) borrowing. Xcel Energy submits route permit application for transmission line project

Xcel Energy submitted a route permit application last week with the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission as it continues to push on with the Huntley-Wilmarth transmission line project. Around 22-thousand landowners and local officials will receive a letter this week updating them on where the project stands.
